The City of Venice and the Bevilacqua La Masa Foundation Institution celebrate Ferruccio Gard’s eightieth birthday with the anthological exhibition in the prestigious venue of Piazza San Marco (St. Marc Square) Il Gard cinetico. Sono solo 4 x 20 (The Kinetic Gard. That’s not only 4 x 20).

Gard, one of the protagonists of the optical-constructivist line of Italian painting (first exhibition of kinetic art in 1969), is still in full activity and indeed, referring to the great Ennio Flaiano, he does not feel like an “old man” but a young man who has turned twenty, four times. The definition of “The Kinetic Gard” is by Gillo Dorfles, whose presentation is published inside the catalogue, together with the text “the kinetic of colour” by the poet and writer Paolo Ruffilli. At the Bevilacqua La Masa Foundation, chaired by Bruno Bernardi and directed by Michele Casarin, Gard’s entire artistic career will be reconstructed, from the first kinetic works of the 1970s to the momentary interludes dedicated to informal and geometric abstractionism in the 1990s, to the intensification of his renewed research in optical since 2000.

Gard’s works, in their weaving of geometries and chromatic intersections, are fully in line with the noble line of Italian and international art that starts with Futurism (and Giacomo Balla in particular) where research into abstract art and the geometrization of painting were combined with the first kinetic experiences. The vibration of Gard’s painting, its elusive depths and its compositional rigour will be able to constitute an intense dialogue, albeit at a distance, between the history, in Venice, of great Venetian painting and contemporaneity, based on colour, geometry and the luminous pulsation of its dynamic weaves.
Ferruccio Gard, who has presented his works in seven editions of the Venice Biennale, in two editions of the Architecture Biennale and at the Quadrennial of Rome in 1986, is recognised as one of the masters and precursors of international Optical-Kinetic research, which has enjoyed an important revival in recent years among critics and the public. The exhibition will be completed by displaying his latest works in black, white and various shades of grey and by abstract-kinetic sculptures in plexiglass, the great novelty of the master’s production.

Free Entrance.

Ferruccio Gard

?

Born in December 1940, Ferruccio Gard is one of the leading exponents of neo-constructivist, programmed and kinetic art, which he has been practising since 1969.

He has taken part in seven Venice Biennials (1982, 1986, 1995, 2007, 2009, 2011 and 2017), the 11th Rome Quadrennials (1986), two International Architecture Biennials in Venice (2016 and 2021) and numerous international exhibitions on kinetic art, including the National Gallery of Modern Art in Prague (2008), the National Gallery of Modern Art in Rome (2012) and in 2014 on Italian kinetic art of the 1970s, at the Museum of Contemporary Art of the City of Buenos Aires and MACLA, the Latin American Museum of Contemporary Art in La Plata (Argentina).
Of great importance was the invitation, in 2017, to the 57th International Art Biennale, with the participation, at the Bevilacqua La Masa Foundation, in St Mark Square, in the exhibition dedicated to the thirty years of activity (1978-2008) of the Visual Art Centre VERIFICA 8 + 1, with a selection of 17 artists, from Bruno Munari, Alberto Biasi and Sara Campesan to Marina Apollonio, Franco Costalonga, Horacio Garcia Rossi and Julio Le Parc, the latter winner of the Grand Prix at the 1966 Biennale and both founders in Paris of GRAV, Groupe de Recerche d’Art Visuelle. With his participation in this exhibition, curated by Giovanni Granzotto and a Collateral Event of the 57th Biennale, Ferruccio Gard was further and definitively consecrated among the historicised artists of programmed and kinetic art.
From Beijing to New York, he has held over 170 solo exhibitions worldwide.
In 2018, he celebrated his half-century of painting with his entrance, at the Farnesina, into the Italian Contemporary Art Collection, considered the most important in the world. In love with Venice, he has lived and worked in the City of the Doges since 1973, with a studio on Lido island.

Organised by the City of Venice and Bevi L’acqua La Masa Foundation Institution, with the support of Cris Contini Contemporary.
